ICAO sets language proficiency standards; it does not prescribe one identical exam for every testing provider. This guide explains the tasks demonstrated in English4Aviation’s test information and free sample. Check your booked appointment instructions for the exact sequence and practical arrangements.
What the assessment measures
The focus is spoken communication and listening in aviation contexts. The six language areas are pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interaction. Standard radiotelephony phraseology matters, together with plain language when a situation cannot be expressed adequately through standard phrases.
Direct interview: explain your experience
You respond to an examiner and develop answers to aviation-related questions. Practise describing a training flight or a change of plan with a clear beginning, explanation and outcome. The follow-up is part of the task: listen to what is asked rather than returning to a prepared speech.
Audio prompts and listening comprehension
The free sample includes recorded questions, ATIS and ATC listening tasks. Practise identifying the message’s main point and relevant details. For a weather report, distinguish the condition from its operational effect. Explain what you understood, and clarify missing information when the task allows interaction.
Readback and picture discussion
English4Aviation’s sample also includes frequency, altitude, flight level, squawk and QNH prompts, the phonetic alphabet and aviation images. For a picture, describe observable details first, then explain a possible situation. Make clear when you are inferring something that the image does not show.
Practice example: an image shows an aircraft near a service vehicle. You can describe their relative positions and the visible activity. If asked what could delay departure, discuss a plausible cause as a possibility rather than claiming that an unseen fault has occurred. This is a language exercise, not operational advice.
Timing and preparation
English4Aviation advertises a 20-minute official online exam. The free guided sample also offers a 20-minute attempt, starting when you press Start test or play a question. Other providers may use different tasks and timings; the sample does not define every ICAO assessment.
Use the free ICAO English test sample to rehearse the task types. Then review one recording of your own speech and note where a listener would struggle to follow your meaning.
Format practice and an official result are separate
The free sample and self-study questions do not produce an official level or certificate. A live simulation adds examiner feedback and an indicative estimate. The official exam costs €159 and includes results and certificate delivery within 24 hours. English4Aviation’s official ICAO English certificate is accepted in every EASA member state.
