Who can become an ICAO English Assessor?
Typically, experienced aviation professionals (pilots, air traffic controllers) or qualified linguists with strong operational English and proven experience in teaching or assessment.
What qualifications or prerequisites are required?
You must hold a high level of English proficiency (ICAO Level 5 or 6) and a valid pilot licence (PPL, CPL, ATPL). Alternatively, you may qualify if you are a certified English language teacher or a professional in the field of linguistics.
What does the assessor training include and how long does it take?
The training covers ICAO rating criteria, standardised test design, conducting structured interviews, scoring practice, rater calibration, and report writing. Our program is delivered via Zoom over a period of 2 days.
What happens after I complete the course?
Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate of training. We will then forward your details to the national CAA, which will add you to the list of approved assessors.
Can I assess candidates in different countries?
Yes. You may assess aviation personnel across all EASA member states, as well as in other countries that recognise EASA-issued certificates.
If I hold ICAO Level 5, can I assess all candidates?
No. Assessors holding ICAO Level 5 are authorised to assess candidates up to Level 4 only. To assess and certify Level 5 and Level 6 candidates, you must hold ICAO Level 6 yourself.
How do I maintain my status as an assessor?
You must remain active as an assessor, attend periodic refresher or calibration sessions, and comply with your LTB or CAA’s renewal requirements. Regular monitoring and continuing professional development are essential to keep your authorisation valid.
